CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Lance was tired. He'd already gotten through two autopsies today and was about to prep for the third. Carrie, his assistant, was still at lunch, so he went about setting things up. He was moving the small equipment table to the side when a slight movement caught his eye across the room. He glanced up, finding a young man watching him. He could tell by the slight shimmer of the body that the man wasn't living.

Glancing around the area, then up to the viewing room to make sure he was alone, Lance smiled, seeing no one else around. "Can I help you?"

"You can see me?" The man walked over to him.

"I can." Lance looked closely at the man. He appeared to be in his twenties, wearing board shorts and a t-shirt with a skateboard on the front of it. He had shoulder-length blonde hair and brilliant blue eyes. "But I'm the only one that can. If my assistant comes in, I'll have to act like you're not here or she'd freak out. Is your body here?"

"Yeah, the other guy did my autopsy earlier. I had a heart attack while boarding. I was just about to make a jump when my chest got all tight and I couldn't breathe. I fell off my board and this one guy tried to help me, but the next thing I knew, I was standing there, watching them do CPR on me."

"What's your name?" Lance asked.

"Jeremy Larson."

"You from around here?"

"I was born in Philly, but moved here when I was three, so yeah, I claim this as home." He looked around the room. "How come you can see me, and the others can't?"

"I'm not sure. I was in a bad wreck. When I came to, I could see ghosts." Lance tried to focus on his prep work. "I'm Lance."

"Nice to meet you."

"Any reason you decided not to go into the light?"

"Well, at first I was in shock. I mean, I'm twenty-four. I shouldn't have had a heart attack. Then I was watching my autopsy and it was really cool. I thought I'd hang out for a bit longer and see you guys do a few more."

"Kind of gruesome." Lance smiled.

"Maybe, but it's fascinating. I was never smart enough to be a doctor, but that was my dream even if it couldn't come true. The human body is so amazing. I used to read books on how everything worked. Now, I get to see you guys do this, and I'm learning so much." Jeremy stepped closer. "It's even better now that you can see me. I can ask questions."

"But I can't answer if my assistant is in here. I'm happy to answer your questions when we're alone though. How long do you plan on hanging around?"

Jeremy shrugged. "What's in the light?"

"I'm not sure. I can't see it. Maybe Heaven?"

"Maybe. It feels peaceful. Makes you want to go into it, but I'm not ready. I can stick around here for a while, right?"

"You mean the lab or this realm in general?"

"Realm, that's a good word for it.
